Alınyazımız Coğrafya

   Başta sosyal medyada olmak üzere günlük hayatınızda pek çok kez insanların ’‘Coğrafya kaderdir.’’ dediğini duymuşsunuzdur. Peki bu söz ne anlama gelir? Ya da gerçekten coğrafya kader midir?

   ‘‘Coğrafya kaderdir.’’  sözünü; ‘‘İnsanın doğup büyüdüğü yer, o insanın alınyazısıdır.’’ şeklinde açıklayabiliriz. Şimdi ise bu meşhur lafın doğruluğunu tartmaya gelelim.

   Bence coğrafyanın hayatımızda çok önemli bir yeri olduğu tartışılmazdır. Böyle olunca kaderimizin şekillenmesinde büyük rol oynadığı da doğrudur. Bunun sebebi; yüzyıllardır insanoğlunun, doğanın baskın geldiği durumlarda doğa koşullarına ayak uydurmak zorunda kalmasıdır. Ülkemizden örnek verecek olursak Ege bölgesinde yaşayan insanlar genellikle zeytincilikle uğraşır ve yemeklerinin çoğu da zeytinyağlıdır. Doğu Anadolu’da yaşayan insanlarsa hayvancılıkla uğraşır ve yemeklerinde sebze yerine et daha baskındır. Ya da İç Anadolu’da yağış oranı az, iklim sıcak ve kurak olduğundan kerpiç evler görülürken Karadeniz’de ormanların çok olması nedeniyle ahşap evler görülür. Örneklerden de anlayabileceğimiz gibi coğrafya birçok konuda belirleyici bir faktördür.

   Ancak bir insanın kaderinin belirlenmesi tamamen coğrafyaya mı bağlıdır? Ben bunun cevabının hayır olduğunu düşünenlerdenim. Çünkü bence insan kendi kaderini kendisi şekillendirir. Coğrafya bu durumda insanı kısıtlayıcı durumdadır. Örneğin bir insanın gelecekte seçebileceği üç seçeneği varsa coğrafya bunları ikiye indirir, ama yine de o ikisi arasından son seçimi insan yapar. Yani tüm yükü coğrafyaya atmak kolay yolu seçmek, sorumluluktan kaçmak demektir.

   İnsanlar çoğunlukla başka ülkelerde yaşayan insanların ‘‘daha güzel’’ hayatlarını gördükleri zaman coğrafyanın kader olduğunu söylerler. Kaderlerini belirleyenin aslında kendileri olduğunun farkında değillerdir ya da farkında oldukları halde bilmezlikten gelmektedirler.

   Uzun lafın kısası coğrafya kader değildir, kaderi belirleyici bir unsurdur.

                                                              Our Destiny Geography

    You may have heard many times in your daily life, especially on social media, that people say ‘‘Geography is destiny.’’.  So what does this word mean? Or is geography really destiny?

   "Geography is destiny." We can explain it as "The place where person was born and raised is the destiny of that person." Now let's come to weigh the accuracy of this famous statement.

     I think it is indisputable that geography has a very important place in our lives. It is also true that this plays a big role in shaping our fate. The reason of this; For centuries, human beings have had to adapt to the conditions of nature when nature prevails. For example, people living in the Aegean region usually deal with olives and most of their meals are olive oil. But people living in Eastern Anatolia are engaged in animal husbandry and in foods meat is more dominant than vegetables. Or, because of the low precipitation and the climate is hot and dry in Central Anatolia, mudbrick houses are seen, while wooden houses are seen due to the rich forests in the Black Sea. As we can understand from the examples, geography is a determining factor in many issues.

     But is the determination of the fate of a person completely dependent on geography? I am one of those who think that the answer is no. Because I think person shapes his/her own destiny by himself/herself. Geography is in this case restricting people. For example, if a person has three options to choose from in the future, geography reduces them to two but still person makes the final choice between the two. In other words,  put the entire load on geography means choosing an easy way and avoiding responsibility.

     People often say that geography is destiny when they see the "more beautiful" lives of people living in other countries. They are not aware that it is they who determine their destiny or they are unaware of being aware.

     Long story short, geography is not destiny, it is a factor of determining the destiny.
